Humpday Health: Diet tips for holiday party season

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — December is the prime time for people to get together with their family, friends, or coworkers to celebrate the holidays, but all these parties can be detrimental to your diet.

Dietitians like Laura Bransfield from Summerfield Custom Wellness recommend making sure veggies are on the menu.

“If you know you’re going to a party and you’re not sure what’s gonna be there, if you’re the one that shows up with a vegetable side dish, then at least you know there’s something healthy that you’ll be able to put on your plate,” said Bransfield.

Choosing a low-fat or sugar-free option to bring to a party isn’t necessarily the best idea.

“We don’t really encourage the low-fat, sugar-free, all processed foods. We really would encourage people to more use real ingredients to make a delicious, homemade treat and then just really be mindful and enjoy that,” said Bransfield.

When it comes to alcohol at a holiday party, it’s not the calories that hurt you. It’s the lowered inhibitions that come with having a few beverages, so be mindful of how much you drink.

“What I find is people will have the best of intentions when they go to a party and they’re gonna eat healthfully or they’re only gonna have vegetables or whatever. Then they have a glass of wine or a couple cocktails, and then they’re just face down in the spinach dip or whatever,” said Bransfield.

Keeping these tips in mind can help your diet during the holiday party season.
